The Invitation

CHM's Office of Faculty Affairs and Development sponsored a new faculty development series in 2006 titled Core Competencies for Medical Educators. Our goal in this series is to address core skills for teaching and evaluating medical students. As you will note below, Dr. Stephen Yelon and others have agreed to share their expertise in this arena. These sessions are now available on-line.

Core Competencies for Medical Educators:
A CHM Faculty Development Series

1. Principles of Effective Instruction

Dr. Steve Yelon will present a series of principles for effective instruction, derived from over 35 years of studying both effective clinical and classroom faculty. These principles will assist in understanding the reasons for teaching a certain way, designing new instruction creatively, and redesigning existing instruction. By the end of the session, participants will be able to recognize the use (or absence or misuse) of the principles in instruction.

2. Tips and Tools for Effective Ambulatory Precepting

Dr. Gary Ferenchick will present tools and strategies for effective precepting of trainees in the ambulatory setting, discussing and demonstrating case-based teaching methods, the steps in being a “One Minute Preceptor” and the RIME evaluation framework. Video vignettes and cases will be used during this workshop.

3. Clinical Evaluation

Dr. Christopher Reznich will present a useful framework for evaluating medical students and residents in clinical settings. Topics will include evaluation purposes, content, and methods. Common rater errors and evaluation issues will also be addressed.

4. Providing Constructive Feedback to Learners

Providing meaningful feedback to learners is essential to improving their clinical performance. Dr. Anderson will present how and when to provide feedback, related issues, and how to prepare for formal feedback sessions.
