Many of you are outstanding teachers, clinicians, investigators, and leaders. We want to recognize your efforts and outstanding work. Each year there are many faculty who deserve recognition, yet there are few or no nominations for university and college awards. We plan to work with your Department leaders to allow you to be nominated and provide you with recognition. If you think that you or your colleagues are candidates for awards, we encourage you to approach your department leaders for nominations. It is time to "sing your praises." William C. Wadland, MD, MS CHM Outstanding Community Faculty AwardSummary: The CHM Community Faculty Award honors full-time, community-based faculty for their strong contribution to the college's educational and community based research programs. Description: The Quality of the educational programs at CHM is heavily dependent upon faculty who reside within and have devoted their academic careers to community based education and research. This award is presented each year to honor those members of the community faculty who have demonstrated excellence in their field. Criteria: The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, or service. Eligibility: The nominee must be employed less than 50% by CHM, regardless of the source of funding. Deadlines: Aug 1 of each year. CHM Outstanding Community Volunteer Faculty AwardSummary: The CHM Community Volunteer Faculty Award recognizes the volunteer faculty who reside in CHM's community network and serve as outstanding role models in the college's educational program. Description: The Community Volunteer Faculty Award recognizes that CHM's educational and research programs are heavily dependent upon the volunteer faculty who donate their time and energy to the college. The award is presented each year to the outstanding members of CHM community volunteer faculty. Criteria: The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in teaching, research or service. Eligibility: The nominee must hold a clinical volunteer appointment with Michigan State University and not receive any requital for teaching. Deadlines: Aug 1 of each year. CHM Outstanding Faculty AwardSummary: The Award recognizes outstanding service by CHM faculty in the areas of teaching, research/ clinical service and public outreach. Description: The CHM Outstanding Faculty Award is presented in the Spring of each year to those CHM faculty who were selected by the CAC Awards Subcommittee for this award. Nominations for the Award may be submitted to the College Advisory Council bya present or former CHM faculty member, student or resident. Selection of the award recipients will be made by the CHM Awards committee. Criteria: Each nominee will be assessed against the following principal criteria: Evidence of exceptional instructional performance in a variety of settings including professional, graduate and undergraduate students, curriculum development, development of innovative course material, scholarly work related to teaching, and academic advising. Evidence of exceptional research, creative and scholarly activities in traditional, nontraditional or emerging areas with recognition that scholarly distinction can be demonstrated in a variety of ways such as creative synthesis, interpretation and application of existing knowledge, as well as discovery of new knowledge; OR Evidence of exceptional clinical service. While not as important as the three criteria listed above, evidence of other contributions to Michigan State University, e.g. in academic administration and governance, may also be considered by the Awards Committee. Administrative excellence and length of service, however, should not be used as major criteria for nomination. Generally, however, nominees have at least five years of service at Michigan State University. Eligibility: All CHM faculty, whether in the tenure stream or holding a temporary or HHP appointment, are eligible for consideration. The nominee must be employed at least 50% by CHM, regardless of the source of funding. Deadlines: Aug 1 of each year. University Distinguished Faculty AwardSummary: Distinguished Faculty Awards are made each year to members of the faculty, i.e. tenure system faculty, librarians, and individuals holding health programs (HP) appointments, for outstanding total service to the University. Description: The All University Awards Committee, appointed by the President, annually confers up to ten Distinguished Faculty Awards, each with a stipend of $3000. The Distinguished Faculty Award recipients will be recognized at the annual Awards Convocation. Up to three nominations for the University Faculty Award can be submitted by the College to the University. The CAC Awards subcommittee will select and forward to the University. Those nominees for the College Outstanding Faculty Award who also meet the University Award Criteria. Criteria: The University Awards Committee will pay particular attention to evidence of distinction in the discovery, dissemination and application of knowledge as reflected in each nominee's reputation and standing within the appropriate peer group in relevant fields of endeavor. The following principal criteria will be used: Evidence of exceptional research, and creative and scholarly activities in traditional, nontraditional, or emerging areas, recognizing that scholarly distinction can be demonstrated in a variety of ways, such as creative synthesis, interpretation and application of existing knowledge, and the discovery of new knowledge. Evidence of exceptional instructional performance in a variety of settings, including credit and noncredit teaching, undergraduate and honors instruction, supervision graduate and professional students, curriculum development, and academic advising. Evidence of exceptional public outreach in local, national or international settings that build upon the faculty member's professional expertise involving such external activities as consultation and technical assistance, policy analysis, organizing, continuing medical education programs, program development and evaluation, and public information. While not as important as the three criteria above, evidence of other contributions to Michigan State University, such as, in academic administration and governance, should be included and will be considered by the All-University Awards Committee. Eligibility: Same as those for CHM Distinguished Faculty Award. The CAC Awards subcommittee will select and forward to the University those nominees for the College Outstanding Faculty Award who also meet the University Award Criteria. Nominees usually have at least five years of service at Michigan State University. Deadlines: Aug 1 of each year. CHM Teacher-Scholar AwardSummary: The CHM Teacher-Scholar Award seeks to recognize junior faculty who, through achievements in the early stages of their career demonstrate outstanding potential to become distinguished faculty of CHM in the future. Description: The CHM Teacher-Scholar Nominee Award is presented in the Spring of each year to those CHM faculty whose names were forwarded the previous Fall as nominees for the MSU Teacher-Scholar Award. Criteria: The Teacher Scholar Award is granted annually to junior faculty who demonstrate outstanding potential. The following criteria will be used by the University Awards Committee
Eligibility: To be considered for an MSU Teacher-Scholar Award, the faculty member must hold the rank of instructor, assistant professor or associate professor and, at the beginning of the award period must have served on the faculty for at least two semesters but no more than seven academic years at Michigan State University. In addition, nominees must not have more than ten years of employment experience of all kinds since the receipt of the terminal degree. Deadlines: Aug 1 of each year. MSU Teacher-Scholar AwardSummary: The essential purpose of the award is to provide recognition to the most outstanding teachers who have served at MSU for a time period of seven years or less. Description: Up to six Teacher-Scholar awards are given annually to members of the faculty (including tenure system, health programs or with other temporary appointments) from the ranks of the instructor, assistant professor and associate professor who early in their careers have earned the respect of students and colleagues for their devotion to and skill in teaching. Nominations are made by a faculty member, including department chairpersons/school directors, after consultation with an appropriate committee of senior colleagues. Nominees for a Teacher-Scholar Award must be willing to permit a member of the Awards committee to visit their classrooms. Committee visitation is a part of the total evaluation procedure only for those nominees, who after preliminary screening, seem most promising. Eligibility: To be considered for an MSU Teacher-Scholar Award, the faculty member must hold the rank of instructor, assistant professor or associate professor and, at the beginning of the award period must have served on the faculty for at least two semesters but no more than seven academic years at Michigan State University. University Distinguished Academic Staff AwardSummary: The University Distinguished Academic Staff Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of those professionals who serve the University in advising, curriculum development, outreach, extension, research and teaching. Description: The Distinguished Academic Staff Award recognizes the unique efforts and the wide range of excellent contributions made by the University's academic specialists and MSU Extension staff. Up to four awards are given annually. These awards provide University-wide recognition and reward to outstanding individuals with careers demonstrating long term excellence and exceptional contributions to Michigan State University. Nominations may be initiated by faculty, colleagues, administrators, alumni, students, faculty organizations or student organizations; self nominations are also welcome. Nominations are to be submitted to the dean of the college or the administrator of the major administrative unit in which the nominee is appointed. To be forwarded for the University-level consideration, nominations must have the endorsement of the dean or major administrative unit administrator. The college or major administrative unit is responsible for verifying the nominee's length of continuous MSU employment and the completeness of the candidate's packet of support materials. Criteria: Nominations for this award shall be based on a comprehensive and sustained record of excellence in one or more of the areas of :
Nominees shall have made significant contributions to Michigan State University. Nominees shall represent the character and qualities of excellence reflective to Michigan State University, including the application of diversity principles in the ongoing conduct of the nominee's responsibilities. A major portion of the nominee's distinguished professional record of excellence shall have been achieved at Michigan State University. Each nominee will be assessed against the following general criteria: Evidence of excellence and widely recognized academic unit contributions in areas such as advising, curriculum development, outreach, extension, research, teaching and related administrative involvement with support from the University community. As appropriate, other peers, including representatives of peer institutions, national associations and organizations, professional associations, and others may also acknowledge endeavors of excellence. Evidence of innovative and creative contributions through individual or team membership efforts in the areas of advising, curriculum development, outreach, extension, research, teaching and related administrative involvement that reflects excellence and promotes the mission of the University. Eligibility: The nominees must be members of the academic staff who are appointed as Academic Specialists or Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) Academic Staff and must have had a minimum of five years of continuous MSU employment. Faculty with Extension-supported appointments are not eligible for this award. Deadlines: Aug 1 of each year. CHM Outstanding Clinician AwardSummary: The CHM Outstanding Clinician Award recognizes an individual who serves as a role model for CHM students and colleagues. Description: Nominations for the Award must be submitted to the College Advisory Council by a faculty member of CHM. Students, residents, house staff, clinical colleagues and/or patients may be co-nominators. Selection of the award recipient will be made by the CHM Awards committee. Criteria: The CHM Outstanding Clinician Award is presented each year to a clinician faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in:
Eligibility: The nominee must have a regular appointment in CHM and the nomination must be endorsed by the department or unit in which the nominee's appointment resides. Deadlines: Aug 1 of each year. Lester J. Evans, MD, CHM Distinguished Service AwardSummary: The Lester J. Evans Distinguished Service Award is granted each year to recognize those individuals who have made major and enduring contributions to the development of the College of Human Medicine. Description: The Award need not be presented each year. Past winners have included former Deans of the College, individuals who have founded a number of CHM clinical departments, faculty who have promoted innovative educational programs and individuals who have helped to shape a community network. Eligibility: Any past or current, regular or volunteer, faculty member or staff may be considered for the award. The Dean of the College of Human Medicine, in consultation with the College Advisory Council, will select the recipient of the award. Deadlines: Aug 1 of each year. |
